BROTHERS MEMORIES TO BE PUBLISHED

The biggest rugby league scandal in Cairns, ferocious on-field battles and daring clubhouse expansion plans will be remembered in a book celebrating the 90th anniversary of Brothers Leagues Club Cairns.
Chairman of Directors John McCallum called on past and current members, players, coaches and supporters to share their memories for the commemorative book which will be published in October to mark the Club’s 90 years.
“Since a group of junior footballers first took to the field in 1926 under the Brothers name we have seen some extraordinary changes in our club and touched the lives of many people here in the Cairns community,” he said.
“We have enjoyed the highs of multiple premiership wins, the opening of incredible facilities for our members and some devastating lows including our club’s ten-year ban from the local competition.
“We have been researching the rich history of Brothers’ football and social clubs in Cairns for a few years and are calling on the community to help fill some of the gaps we have found.
“Our greatest hero, Harold Burns, left the team to help establish an A-grade side for the Kangaroos in 1931 before returning to ensure the Past Brothers snatched the premiership back from their rivals for three consecutive years.
“Did the Kangaroos repay the favour and let our junior teams play under their umbrella when we were banned from the Cairns competition?
“Brothers want to hear your stories so we can share a few laughs and the odd tear while we plan our celebrations for the year.
“We invite you to connect with the Cairns Brothers fraternity via our Facebook community page called Part of Brothers Cairns History.
“Post your stories and pictures so we can all remember what a great 90 years it has been.”
